People and Animals

Welcome to Volume 9 in which you will learn the basics of sketching one of the most interesting subjects, people and animals.

Sketching people is fascinating because we all share the same basic features but each person’s appearance is unique, and even though we’re all different in appearance, we all experience the same feelings and emotions. The expression of emotion in a drawing can create great appeal. People viewing a portrait will be able to relate to the emotions expressed in it. That relation is what makes the drawing special to the viewer even if they have nothing else in common with the subject. Animals can also be very expressive and can create an emotional response in people too.

The method for sketching people and animals is almost the exact opposite of sketching plants (see Volume 8). Plants are sketched by identifying the major geometric shapes and outside edges before going deeper into detail. When sketching people and animals it’s easiest to start from the inside and work your way out.
